Throughout law school, Tala gained experience defending clients and fighting unjust practices in policing and prisons. She began arguing hearings as a student attorney with Harvard Defenders from her first semester of law school, and spent her first year summer at the Office of the Federal Public Defender of the District of Minnesota. During her second year, Tala interned at the MacArthur Justice Center, where she worked to end unreasonable cellphone seizures by police, and the Department of Labor, where she worked on matters involving workplace health and safety. She spent her second year summer at the Public Defender Service of the District of Columbia. There, she worked on a motion that ultimately secured the early release of an incarcerated client under D.C.’s Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act. During her final year of law school, Tala represented clients facing misdemeanor charges in the Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court as a student attorney at the Criminal Justice Institute. Tala was awarded a Presidential Public Service Fellowship for her work.

Outside of the classroom, Tala dedicated much of her time to local organizing efforts. She has her B.A. from the University of Minnesota, magna cum laude, in mathematics and global studies.
